Is this a trend that we expect to see in the years to come?

Do we expect to see more mercenaries working for organizations like MASSOB and MEND?

Nigeria: Army Arrests Dissmissed Soldier Training MASSOB Members

2 April 2010

The 82nd Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, has arrested a dismissed soldier who was allegedly training members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and kidnappers.

Parading the suspect, a 29-year-old man in Enugu yesterday, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Isah, said the suspect was arrested in December 2009 in possession of a fake identity card of the Nigerian Army. - Isah, however, said that the Army on Tuesday discovered that the suspect was a wanted criminal involved in the kidnap of two Chinese in 2007 at the factory of Innoson Group of companies, Nnewi, Anambra. He said the Army was replaying the press conference held by former Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro, where the gang leader mentioned the suspect as a member of his gang. ” He is a fake army officer terrorising the people of the southeast. He was dismissed from the army as a private for always being on AWOL (Absent Without Leave) and truancy,” Isah said. The suspect confirmed training MASSOB members on combat drills but not to kidnap, saying he left the army to become a ‘freedom fighter.

“I give the boys training not to kidnap but to fight for the freedom of the Igbos. “My aim is to set Igbos free so that they can become a republic. I have no regrets fighting for the freedom of my people. After all, Mandela did not regret fighting for the freedom of his people.

I was never discharged from the army. I honourably discharged myself in order to have time to fight for Biafra, he said.

The suspect said “I cross (freight) Tokunbo vehicles from border to Lagos so that is how I am making my money to fund my organisation.”

Isah said the suspect would be handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.

Items recovered from the suspect include a shotgun, 26 live bullets, army identity card, letter headed papers of the Biafran Army, and two mobile telephone handsets with assorted SIM cards. (NAN)

Uwazuruike: Igbo traders threaten mass action

A new twist has been introduced into the ongoing case of the detained leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazurike, as Igbo traders nationwide have threatened mass action and civil disobedience over the matter.

This is coming on the heels of the news doing the rounds in Anambra State that Chief Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, was mobilising supporters to storm Owerri, the Imo State capital, to show solidarity with the detained MASSOB leader who is billed to appear in court today.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Awka, the Anambra State capital on Monday, the traders and artisans under the aegis of Association of Igbo Traders/Artisans Unions, decried the continued detention of Chief Uwazuruike and called for his unconditional release from detention.

In the statement signed by its National President, Chief Ben Okoye; National Secretary, Chief Silas Otu and Chief Emeka Kalu, Lagos State chairman (on behalf of the state chairmen), the association said “the Federal Government must release Chief Ralph Uwazuruike now without any condition or we shall mobilise Igbo traders/artisans across the country and embark on civil disobedience and economic sabotage.”

    Uwazuruike: Union wants unconditional release

Association of Igbo Traders/Artisans Union yesterday expressed concern over the continued detention in Kuje prison, Abuja of the leader of the Movement for Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazurike, and called on the Federal Government to release him unconditionally now or face civil unrest.

In a press statement by the Coalition after its National Executive meeting in Onitsha, the group said it had verified the circumstances that led to Uwazurike’s invitation to the Imo State Police Command in January this year, and his subsequent travails and ordeals at the zone 9 police command in Umuahia, as well as detention at Kuje prison, Abuja and became convinced that he could not have been a kidnapper.

The group said Uwazurike was a true Igbo son and leader whose presence and the activities of his group brought hope to many Igbos, and have succeeded in removing the veil of floor, cowardice, inferiority complex, stagnation and hopelessness among Ndigbo since the end of the civil war in 1970.

The group in the statement signed by Ben Okoye, Silas Otu and Emeka Kalu, Chairman, Secretary and Lagos branch Chairman, respectively urged the Federal Government to urgently release Uwazurike without conditionality attached or they would mobilise Igbo traders and artisans across the country for the purpose of embarking on civil disobedience and economic sabotage.

While lending support to Uwazurike and MASSOB over their struggles, the group condemned the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation,Ohanaeze, governors, traditional rulers in Igboland as well as the clergy and political office holders for their seeming nonchalance towards Uwazurike’s present ordeal and unjust detention by the Federal Government.

Uwazurike, THISDAY learnt, would be brought to Owerri High Court today for trial.

MASSOB: Igbo traders, artisans seek Uwazurike’s releaese

AWKA—SOME Igbo traders and artisans from various parts of the country have demanded the immediate release of the leader of the Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Chief Ralph Uwazurike unconditionally, arguing that the MASSOB leader has not committed any offence.

In a statement by the national chairman of the group, Chief Ben Okoye, the national secretary, Chief Silas Otu and Lagos State chairman, Chief Emeka Kalu, the traders said that having studied the circumstances surrounding the invitation of Uwazurike by the Imo State police command, as well as his travails at the Zone 9 of the police command, they urged government to release him in the interest of peace.

According to them, Uwazurike is a true son of Igbo land whose presence and activities through MASSOB have brought hope to Igbo, adding that he has succeeded in removing the veil of fear, cowardice, inferiourity complex, stagnation and hopelessness among Igbo.

They warned that the refusal to release Uwazurike may lead to civil disobedience.

    Ohaneze Ndigbo condemned

The group also condemned Ohaneze Ndigbo, the Igbo Governors, traditional rulers and political office holders for what it described as their nonchalant attitude towards the travails of Uwazurike, who, it claimed, is unjustly being detained by the Federal government.

I LOVE NDIGBOS! LONG LIFE God’s people.
Uwazurike must live, we must live and breath good in the face of oppression, when we have a mentors of truth… ka anyi nwere otu obi!
God will use Anambra for the Igbos good it looks like they see its the US of the Igboland and they try to quench it with their Federal drama sheats.
After watching the backgrounds (the old homes and structures: i began to think about a Film village as a legacy
for the igbos: would any governor do this for us?)
and dressing in the music show of pericoma of the above web page…i began
to reflect only on the good rich culture of the old. Do we have any Igbo languaged translator on Web (www)?
Igbo language translator web pages? How could the old ones in the igbo land
do to try to enter igbo language as one of the languages that one can translate also in any of the free language
translation application software on the web (www). If done, it would be to buttress a point of legacy for the igbo children any where in the world, also.
publishing igbo language books look more temporary than the igbo on web which would live with ages, and if done Igbo language would also follow in the many languagaes in the world
One can actually see and translate on those wed software that could translate klanguages in the world. I was so happy when I
saw igbo version of Jehovah’s witness Bible preaching handouts and it made me feel so good, but the web is also modern.
Follow me to watch the Pericoma’s show…i like the good culture and traditional
background and the good words of our igbo languages, lets filter the good part of our
culture and tradition and maintain it.
Also I understood that an Igbo son in Ebonyi state is trying to bestow Igbo language legacy for the children to come,
would he also look at this my point? Everybody has his duty for his people. I do my own and you do your own.
Long life the republic of Biafra!
